How to Clean Beverage Dispensers

Beverage dispensers need to be cleaned regularly like all other food and drink containers. If you use them for drinks other than water and don't clean them, the beverage it will dispense will start to taste different after a while. Also, there could be acidic build-ups and leftovers from previous uses. The dangers of bacteria and other pollutants is also another risk factor that should encourage you to sanitize your beverage dispensers.

It is advisable to clean beverage dispensers after every change of liquids, or after every four to six weeks of continuous use.

Water Dispenser

Here are quick and easy steps to cleaning your dispensers:

How to Clean Beverage Dispensers

You will need rubber gloves, bleach, hot or tap water, and a clean sponge or a scrub pad.

1. If you are using a mechanical or electrical beverage dispenser, make sure to unplug it and remove all non-waterproof parts that do not need to be washed or cleaned. Some dispensers only need the tanks or containers removed for cleaning.

2. Mix one tablespoon of bleach to every gallon of water you will be using. Bleach is more effective than just soap and water since it eliminates pollutants and bacteria more.

3. Make sure to put on your rubber gloves to protect your hands. Take a sponge or a scrub pad and use it to clean the dispenser using the bleach solution you just mixed. Avoid using abrasive materials like steel wool so you don't scratch the dispenser.

4. Leave the solution on for five minutes before washing it away with water.

5. Repeat the same process for other parts, including the spigot or the valve, if those are detachable. Use Q-Tips or a thin stick wrapped in cloth to reach tight spots. Use hot water to rinse.

6. Continuously run the dispenser through water three or four times until there are no more suds or bleach solution left on its surface. This ensures that the dispenser is thoroughly cleaned and non-toxic for future use.

7. Use a soft clean cloth to wipe away the moisture, or wait for it to dry naturally before using the beverage dispenser again.

Beverage dispensers that have electrical parts can be cleaned simply by dusting or wiping the parts with dry cloth. Again, make sure that all parts are unplugged to prevent accidents and electrocution.

Some beverage dispensers can be cleaned by dishwashers, but it is always a good idea to clean them yourselves so you are sure that you got through all the spots and other places that are hard to reach.
This is also a good time to see if anything looks amiss, like wires that are exposed or metal parts that are badly dented or rusted. If these cannot be cleaned or easily fixed, it is probably time to get a new dispenser.

It is important to maintain sanitary beverage dispensers to avoid cases of poisoning or other bacterial ailments. Cleaning also preserves the quality of your dispenser, so you can use it for many more years to come.

Water Cooler Dispenser Types - Which Water Dispensers Are Best?

Water coolers typically fall into one of two categories; bottled and bottle less. The look of the typical water cooler dispenser has changed drastically in recent years, from bulky eyesores to sleek and stylish fixtures that blend into the decor of any type of home or office. These exciting new designs are featured in a wide variety of colors including natural wood finish, gold and stainless steel. They are an attractive and functional addition to any home or office.

Bottled Water Cooler Dispensers

Water Dispenser

In offices where a permanent alteration such as a plumbed-in water cooler is not permitted, a bottled water dispenser is the suitable choice. Because this type of water cooler dispenser is impermanent and portable, it can be placed in direct proximity to any work area, far from any water supply. This is especially convenient in temporary offices such as those found on construction sites.

Water Cooler Dispenser Types - Which Water Dispensers Are Best?

Having a supply of bottled water to drink is particularly beneficial in areas where the tap water is unpleasant tasting or of questionable quality. In the home, a bottled water cooler dispenser is ideal in situations where permanent alterations to the premises are not permitted, such as in rental units.

Pros:

  • Ideal for spaces where no plumbing is present
  • Good alternative to tap water, which can sometimes be of poor quality
  • Portable and convenient

Cons:

  • Purchasing a supply of bottled water
  • Replacement bottles and empties require storage space
  • Full bottles can be difficult to change due to weight

Bottleless Water Cooler Dispenser

A bottleless water dispenser is generally more compact than the bottled variety because it lacks the bulky bottle. It is conveniently attached to existing plumbing for an unlimited free source of water. The water is filtered and then cooled before it is dispensed, converting even unpalatable tap water into great tasting fresh, clean water.

Although the installation of this type of water cooler is slightly more complicated because it is connected to a water source, it is virtually maintenance-free except for regular filter changes.

Pros:

  • Free unlimited source of water; no need to purchase water
  • No bulky bottles to change and store
  • Compact and virtually maintenance-free

Cons:

  • More complicated installation
  • Relatively permanent; not portable
  • Cannot be used in rentals or areas with no water source

Summary

A water cooler dispenser can be obtained from a variety of places. Most home supply stores carry them in one form or another, and water delivery companies such as Culligan also offer the units for lease or purchase. A host of online dealers such as Aquaverve offer both bottled and bottleless water coolers in a wide selection of exciting new designs and colors. Browsing the sites of many online dealers gives you the opportunity to view a large number of different designs prior to making a purchase.

Choosing among the wide variety of office water coolers may be a daunting task and it's best to rely on online product reviews and consumer opinions before deciding between bottleless or bottled water dispensers.

Pet Water Dispensers and Water Fountains

Pet water dispensers and pet fountains fulfill an oft ignored need. Pets, especially cats and dogs, require fresh water and lots of it. Cats happen to be more finicky about their water; they like it fresh. We, as pet owners, have our own obligations to society, and cannot always be present, or even aware, when the pooch or kitty needs a drink. Work, traffic, family (human), unforeseen circumstances.....all these contribute to our absences from home at "water time".

Pet water dispensers are of two general types. Simple, and automated models.
Simple dispensers are composed of two parts. The storage unit, and the dish. If the level recedes below a certain point, water from the storage unit comes down into the dish. Mobile or compact dispensers, composed of a water bottle and a retractable dish, require the pet owner to squeeze water from the bottle into the dish.
Automated dispensers include filters, and a pump activated by low levels. As such when the water level recedes, more is pumped into the dish. Some models constantly circulate and filter the water.

Water Dispenser

Pet water fountains come in two categories. Faucet fountains, and conventional fountains. The faucet fountains are geared towards the outdoors and are attached to a faucet. The mechanical kinds require that the pet nudges a lever for water to flow. This would also require some training. The automated faucet fountains are triggered by motion or proximity sensors. Some models are equipped with filters.
Conventional pet fountains are composed of a storage unit that is refilled by the pet owner, a spout, and a dish. The water is constantly circulated and is constantly flowing out of the fountain or spout into the dish.

Pet Water Dispensers and Water Fountains

The best configuration of water dispenser, is one that filters, aerates and recirculates the water. It has been noted that flowing sources tend to increase water intake by pets.
This combined with the filtration and optimize the health benefits your pet will receive from your water dispenser.

One major disadvantage with the bottled water dispenser is the maintenance. In the event the water cooler is not in regular use, or during summer months when the temperatures are higher, the clear fresh taste of bottled water might be difficult to achieve. Proper care of the bottled water and of the dispensers has to be a priority.

It is advised to store the full bottles at a constant temperature and, if possible, in a cool area. This discourages the expansion and contraction of the bottles that can draw microscopic material into the bottles. This also helps in preventing the growth of algae. The person changing the bottle must wash the hands and wipe the top and neck of the new bottle with a clean sterile cloth.

Bottled water dispensers must be cleaned at least once a month by removing the empty water bottle and adding 1 tablespoon of bleach to the water reservoir. Add sufficient cold water from the tap to let the bleach fill the tubing between the reservoir and tap and let the bleach solution stand for 5-10 minutes. A small brush cloth or sponge can be used to clean the reservoir. Add several cups of fresh bottled water to flush out the bleach completely.
